About Department 
The Clinical Biochemistry Department is a major section of St Vincent’s Pathology and is located at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy. St Vincent’s Pathology is committed to the provision of high quality diagnostic and consultative pathology services to St Vincent’s Health Australia Hospitals, as well as Specialists and General Practitioners in the Melbourne area.
About the Role
As part of the Biochemistry team, the Medical Scientist is directly responsible for the efficient production of accurate, high quality and timely results. The incumbent will also be responsible for the communication of critical results to requesting clinicians, assessment of Quality Control and other duties as assigned by the section supervisor. Participation in out-of-hours shifts and on-call rosters is required.
  • Perform the assays in all sections of the department.
  • Perform all quality control testing necessary for each of the assays performed and review, document and act on Quality Control results according to departmental policy.
  • Authorise reports according to laboratory practice.
  • Speak with requestors regarding results and the services of the department.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance.
  • Remedy malfunctions of instruments.
  • Perform external quality control testing and reporting.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Applied Science
  • Previous experience in a Diagnostic Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical and laboratory aspects of general chemistry, chromatography, protein analyses and/or autoimmune serology will be well regarded.
  • Knowledge of internal Quality Control and external Quality Assurance procedures.
