About Department
The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) Adult Social Emotional Wellbeing team is a multi-disciplinary team which provides support to Aboriginal people with mental health and social emotional wellbeing needs.
About the Role
Applications are sought from appropriately qualified consultant psychiatrists with Fellowship of the RANZCP for this position located at the VAHS Preston site.
The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide clinical leadership across five main program areas – Adult Social Emotional Wellbeing, Koori Kids, Financial Wellbeing, the Minajalku Healing Service and the Aboriginal Metropolitan Ice Pilot Program in an Indigenous Mental Health Service.
The Consultant Psychiatrist is accountable for delivering high quality clinical services, contributing to service evaluation and research, and displaying a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in psychiatry relating to both VAHS FCS and St Vincent’s Mental Health Service.
  • Promote liaison with the relevant VAHS, FCS, community and inpatient services, Mental Health Community Support Services (MHCSS), National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), private psychiatrists and general practitioners.
  • Work collaboratively with FCS clinicians and program staff including intake worker/s to ensure the optimum management of consumers’ needs including transition of care planning.
  • Assess, formulate and implement treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and consumers within a recovery-oriented framework according to the current best standards, using the best available evidence and meeting the requirements of relevant law, ethics and community needs.
  • Ensure that the relevant consumer documentation including assessment, progress notes, clinical reviews, medication sheets, treatment plans and discharge forms are completed in a timely manner.
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainee psychiatrists according to their needs and requirements of the RANZCP, the multidisciplinary team and in an emergency to any clinical staff of the Service.

Skills and Experience
  • Fellowship of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
  • Specialist Medical Registration with AHPRA
  • Excellent qualities as a clinician and good communication skills with consumers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership in an Indigenous Mental Health service.
  • Strategic and operational service planning experience.
